Chapter 18
“I’ve lost both of them,” Rami observed as he leaned into the clinic. A content smile tugged at his lips as he shut the door. He knew he’d find Simcha and Gideon on the delivery dock. He laughed softly and his knuckle rubbed back and forth across his lip as he strolled through to the foyer. They were peas in a pod lately and always sneaking off to practice. Simcha’s energy and mood were remarkable and Gideon wasn’t as restless. Gideon’s hoop and basketball were turning out to be the best purchases Rami had ever made. The door to the service hall swung open and Simcha was whistling as he dabbed his forehead with a towel. “You’re both going to be late,” Rami scolded and Simcha waved as he breezed past him cockily.
“We have a plan, I’ll be back in time,” he declared as he pulled his towel over his head. He strutted like a boxer leaving the ring and Rami bit the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing.
“You’re going to hurt yourself!” Rami worried after him.
“You should worry about how you’ll show your face around here after I’ve beat you,” Simcha replied as he took the stairs. Rami shook his head and chuckled as he pushed open the door to the service hall and headed for the bay doors. He could hear the ball smacking cement and he enjoyed the anticipation as he peeked into the bay. Gideon dodged and weaved around invisible opponents then jumped and shot the ball. It found the hoop effortlessly and Rami pressed his lips together to keep from laughing as Gideon pumped his fists and celebrated. “Was it a buzzer beater?” He asked as he shut the door behind him.
“I just won us the championship,” Gideon said as he jogged after the ball. “I’ll be done in a minute,” he said then spun and struggled as if he was escaping a mob before he aimed and flipped the ball at the hoop.
“Simcha looked quite pleased with himself,” Rami said as he skipped down the steps then went to lean against the wall. Gideon slid him a playful wink and it made Rami’s stomach flutter.
“He wouldn’t leave to get ready until he made a basket. I wish you could have been here, I thought he was going to have a heart attack he got so excited and laughed so hard,” he said and Rami nodded.
“I’m sorry I missed that,” he said. “I was upstairs getting ready so I wouldn’t be late for dinner,” he added and Gideon made a pffft sound.
“We’ve got it figured out. It’s Casual Tuesday. We’re not shaving, wearing socks or ties. It’s saving us half the time,” he explained and Rami’s lips twisted as he pretended to consider their plan. There were a few flaws.
“Dinner will be served soon and you’re still playing,” he pointed out.
“But I’m only going to need half as long to get ready,” Gideon reminded him.
“You’re still going to be late,” Rami argued.
“But only half as late.
